The battle between two heavyweights and Elite Eight contenders No. 2 Rivers and No. 5 Exeter, was close. The game featured back-and-forth-action, power plays, penalty kills and missed chances. The teams were tied 1-1 until there were 30 seconds left in the game, when Teddy Wooding (Wrentham, MA) netted the game-winning goal. Rivers eventually earned the 3-1 win, its 4 in a row. Exeter’s loss snapped a seven-game winning streak.

Exeter held a slight advantage in play in the first period, but both teams played an uptempo game with stellar goaltending. Exeter’s penalty kill came away with a bit 5-on-3 kill. Neither team was able to convert, entering the first intermission in a scoreless tie.

In the second period, Bobby Murray (Yarmouth, ME) finally broke the tie when he streaked up the left side, gathered in the puck in front of the Exeter bench and beat Rivers’ Aiden Porter (Weston MA) in the far corner to give Exeter the 1-0 lead.

Rivers began the last frame with a power play, but Exeter shut it down once again by keeping the Rivers’ shooters to the outside and blocking or redirecting their passes. However, just 2:20 into the third, Teddy Wooding (Wrentham, MA) converted a feed from Phillip Tresca (Newtown, MA) to knot the game at one. Both teams responded with more chances, but neither was able to score. A tired Exeter squad called a timeout with 3:54 left, but the team couldn’t recover.mExeter was whistled for holding to set up the Rivers’ power play. They responded with a goal from Wooding for the 2-1 lead. Billy Shea (Medfield, MA) added an empty-net goal with 18 seconds left.
