Brookline, Mass. – In a game with Elite Eight playoff implications, Winchendon traveled to No. 6 Dexter this afternoon on Senior Night in Brookline, Mass. Dexter sent the crowd home happy with a 5-3 win, its ninth victory in a row. The game featured several college commits as well as two of the top goalies in prep hockey.

In the opening period, Winchendon struck first on the power play as PG Ryan Black (Pomfret, CT) slipped a pass to senior Cam Gendron (Boxford, MA) cross-crease, where Gendron fired it home. Dexter pushed back and earned some quality chances but PG goalie James Corcoran (Walpole, MA) stood tall and helped his team head to the locker room up 1-0.

In the second, Harvard commit John Farinacci (Chatham, NJ) picked up a drop pass from junior Aidan Connolly (Marshfield, MA) and fired home a shot far post and in with 11:17 left. Sophomore Ben Raymond (Newton, MA) gathered a pass on the tape from Harvard commit and senior Jack Rathbone (West Roxbury, MA) to score on a breakaway and give Dexter its first lead at 2-1 with 5:55 left in the second. However, Winchendon would even the score with just 1:05 remaining when Matt Fawcett (Lincoln, RI) scored on a 3-on-2 assisted by Gendron and Black. The teams went to the third tied at two.

Dexter came out quickly in the final stanza and took the lead again as Connolly one-timed a feed from Farinacci on the power play just 1:28 into the third. Just over three minutes later, senior Jack Nisbet (Scituate, MA) slipped out of the corner and fired one home to put Dexter up by two goals. Winchendon would not go quietly as Gendron fired home his second on a Fawcett feed. Dexter survived a late Winchendon push and added a Farinacci empty netter to seal the win. Junior goalie and Harvard commit Derek Mullahy (Scituate, MA) made the saves he had to help Dexter get the win.

The victory keeps Dexter very much in the Elite Eight driver’s seat as they host Kents Hill tomorrow. Winchendon only suffered their fifth loss of the year and still has an outside chance. They host Exeter in another big game on Wednesday.

For Dexter, the regular standouts stood out. Rathbone (2A), Farinacci (2G, 1A), Connolly (1G, 1A) all played well. Babson commit Nisbet played with a lot of energy and skill. Sophomore D John Fusco (Westwood, MA) showed speed and a quick release carrying the puck. The line of Raymond, senior AJ Caprio (Scituate, MA) and junior Tommy Grealy (South Boston, MA) worked all 200 feet all afternoon. Raymond showed good separational speed on his goal. Grealy is long, strong and tough to play against. Caprio is smart and won a lot of draws. Senior Nolan Donato (Scituate, MA) was a factor each shift and won pucks. Bobby Pearl (Wakefield, MA) and Kevin MacKay looked sharp in all situations on the blue line.

For Winchendon, the line of Black (2A), Fawcett (1G, 2A) and Gendron (2G, 1A) was as usual the team’s most consistent threat to score. Senior Danny Allen (Harrisville, RI) had some good shifts on the left wing, has some size and good touches. Senior D Matt Rickard (Coventry, RI) made lots of plays in all three zones and in all situations. He does a lot well. Big D Dante Vasconcellos (Woburn, MA) at 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds was tough to play against and has made some progress in his puck play.
