Andover, Mass. – The game started off without much execution in either end, but the teams found rhythm in the second period. Andover dominated in the third and defeated Deerfield 3-1.
The first period was a feeling out process for both teams, as they were bogged down in the neutral zone. The first period ended 0-0.
In the second, teams made crisper passing and created better scoring opportunities. Coverage breakdowns lead to breakaway chances for both sides, but Andover goalie Charles Archer (Belleville, ON) and Deerfield goalie Thomas Gale (Kirkland, QC/Dartmouth) both made impressive point-blank stops to keep the game scoreless. Things remained knotted up until Deerfield’s Connor Guest (Peterborough, ON) tipped in a shot from the point on the power play with four minutes left. Deerfield took the 1-0 advantage into intermission.
Andover entered the third period with more tenacity on pucks and more scoring chances. With 13 minutes left in the period, Dante Maribito (Georgetown, MA) created a turnover, walked to the front of the net and tucked home the tying goal. Three minutes later, Maribito jumped on a loose puck that popped into the slot, where he fired one home on the power play to give Andover the 2-1 lead. Andover clamped down on defense and senior forward Quinn Doyle (Pittsford, NY) capped off a great individual rush with a cross-body wrister to make it 3-1.
Andover will travel to Belmont Hill and Deerfield will have a week off before facing Loomis Chaffee on Feb. 7.
While both goalies played quite well in this game, Dante Maribito was the most consistent forward on the ice. He was strong on the puck, was quick for his size and caused mismatch problems at the prep level. Sasha Shogren (Edina, MN), was intriguing for Deerfield as he created a lot of great looks in the second and third period thanks to his footspeed and keen passing ability.
